Daily Covid cases top 4k, highest in nearly 3 months | India News

Daily cases of Covid-19 in the country crossed 4,000 on Thursday for the first time in nearly three months, as infections continued to inch up in around 10 states, led by Kerala and Maharashtra.
Data available so far suggests Friday’s count is likely to be in the same range. Prior to Thursday’s count of 4,033 fresh cases — as per TOI’s Covid database — India had last reported more than 4,000 cases in a day on March 10.
A bulk of the new cases are being reported from Kerala and Maharashtra, with both states posting more than 1,000 daily cases for the past three days. Maharashtra logged 1,134 fresh infections on Friday, its highest single-day count since February 24. The seven-day average of daily cases in the state has doubled in the past week, rising from 385 on May 27 to 783 on Friday. Mumbai reported 763 cases on Friday, the highest single-day tally since February 4, when the figure was 846.
Kerala’s numbers come a day late. The state had recorded 1,370 fresh cases on Thursday, the highest since March 6.
Cases were on the rise in other states as well, including all southern states except Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka logged 297 and 259 new cases over the last two days, with the seven-day average nearly doubling in the last 12 days.
The daily numbers are lower in Tamil Nadu — 145 and 113 in the last two days — but the seven-day average doubled in the state in the last six days, going from 52 to 102.
Meanwhile, Goa reported 50 fresh cases on Friday, the highest daily count in the tiny state since February 22. Other states in the midst of a rise in infections include Telangana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Bengal.
However, deaths from the virus have not seen a significant rise so far. India reported five fresh deaths on Friday, with data from a few states yet to come in. The toll was four on Thursday. These figures do not include fatalities from earlier months being added to the toll now.
Active cases in the country are likely to cross 22,000, up from around 17,700 on Sunday.
