DGGI raids UP tobacco trader, kin of former SP cabinet minister | India News

LUCKNOW: A 20-member team of the Lucknow Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) raided a tobacco trader in Ambedkar Nagar on Friday after a tip-off about tax evasion.
The teams searched two factories of Pooja Industries and three premises of its owner, Haji Nasim, in Ambedkar Nagar. The owner also happens to be a relative of a former Samajwadi Party cabinet minister. Sources privy to the investigation claimed that so far tax evasion worth Rs 5.5 crore through shell companies had been deducted.
The DGGI, Ahmedabad unit, had earlier raided the Kanpur and Kannauj premises of perfume trader Piyush Jain and unearthed Rs 198 crore in unaccounted cash.
Sources in the department said seven premises of Haji Nasim — three residential, two factories, and two warehouses — were searched. “Documents are being scrutinised,” sources said. A source claimed that multiple invoices, all below Rs 50,000 for one full truckload to avoid generation of e-bills, were generated in the name of fake firms. The transport company will also be searched.
The sources also claimed that shortages of raw material and finished goods were noticed during physical stock-taking. Also, one of the factories was not registered and probably would be seized along with a warehouse where raw material was stocked without mention in the record books. The agency will seize cash under the provisions of CGST Sec 67, those privy to the probe said.
