Football: Malaysia draw 2-2 with Singapore, one more point needed to advance to semis

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Under-23 team and Singapore shared the spoils in the ‘Causeway Derby’ at the Vietnam SEA Games at the Thien Truong Stadium in Nam Dinh on Saturday (May 14).

The sides drew 2-2 in their Group B encounter and Harimau Muda now just needs a point against Cambodia on Tuesday (May 17) to advance to the semi-finals while Singapore will have to rely on other results to see if they get to the next stage.

Malaysia first took the lead as early as the fourth minute when striker Luqman Hakim Shamsuddin capitalised on a defensive error by Singapore.

But three minutes later, Singapore equalised when Syah Shahiran scored an outside foot beauty from 25m out.

Both sides exchanged attacks in the second half and it was an emotionally charged affair as players from both sides played with aggression and even had minor on-field altercations.

Singapore then got the lead when Harhys Stewart scored in the 78th minute, but three minutes later, Nur Azfar Fikri played a super-sub role by scoring the equaliser.
